Merganser, Ephraim Hildreth, Rio Grande, New Jersey, last quarter 19th century

Only known merganser by Ephraim Hildreth. One of New Jersey’s earliest decoy makers. Flat bottom with ‘EH’ carved into the bottom, measures 15 ½”.

CONDITION: Original paint that has worn to bare wood in many spots; tight drying cracks throughout; large piece of wood has split off from tail; void in the wood around neck seat; bottom 1/3 of the head is a professional replacement piece; head was off and reattached at one point; worn from age and use.
