Root head merganser, Roger Williams, Sheepshead Bay, Long Island, New York, circa 1820’s.
Root head with extended crest is dowelled through the body and splined on the underside. Slightly pinch breasted with shaped wings. Similar carving and paint pattern to lot 343 in the Sotheby's/ Guyette & Schmidt, January 2000 auction. Measures 16 1/4" long.
CONDITION: Paint appears to be a mix of original and very old in use repaint; moderate to significant flaking and wear; hit by shot; filled cracks in back; old chip in bill and tail; chip in back near tail; hairline crack in crest.
